100% agreed. I don't like what they've done with him in the sequels and I know lots of fans adore him because he's pretty/badass, but in the original game he is a textbook example of how to make a villain terrifying. Every time you saw him filled me with dread because that meant something AWFUL was going to happen.

They also hit just the right note of making him easy to hate but also pity. When you find out how he was created and how much he was used by Shinra, no goddamn wonder he want insane. When I finally beat him I felt like I was putting him down out of mercy.
