I do both! They're different and enjoyable reading experiences. Reading fanfic is more like superhero comics to me - you know the basic outlines/stories of the characters but not what's going to happen, and there can also be a wacky AU every now and then.

This is a perfect explanation of fanfiction and comics for me! Of course I'm going to favour stories and characters I'm familiar with (why do comic movies do the same with obvious properties? Same reason. Fucking Wolverine). Reading original stories, or non-cape comics, isn't quite the same experience I'm looking for in fanfiction or capes.
