What about Silent Hill?

Actually, you know what the creepiest air raid siren is, to me?

This.

It's a simulation, but I'm told it matches pretty closely the original massive siren it's imitating.

That sounds VERY different from the sound they usually use in fiction! Wow!

Now that I've heard it, I would speculate that this is because using the real sound would make everyone shit their pants, heh.

Believe it or not, most sirens used in fiction are real. The ones used in Silent Hill sound like certain models used as civil warning systems like for oncoming severe weather.

However, most sirens used these days are much smaller. The massive Chrysler being simulated in the video is about the size of a car, was ground-or-roof mounted and had a gigantic engine for its blower.

I am learning so many interesting things from F!S today. I am pleased.

That's pretty cool! Given how sometimes sound effects sound nothing like the real version it's actually fun to hear that sirens are usually an exception!
But then again, maybe there's nothing like it for the feeling?

In the photos, it doesn't look significantly larger than modern tornado sirens, which are mounted up high and look smaller than they are.

The echo makes it super creepy, though.

Haha, I was going to mention Silent Hill as well.

God, that siren simulation sounds like it came straight out of hell.

I know right? I've never heard a siren like it, probably because most sirens simply aren't that friggin' huge.

Wow. The tones of that siren are off just enough to make the stomach drop.

It really does sound like the end of the world.

Huh, that sounds kind of like Israel's air raid sirens, just a bit lower in tone. It doesn't capture how, when it goes off, it vibrates right down through your ears. You can feel sirens.

We hear them all the time, during air raid practices, memorial days, etc. It never occurred to me people would find it so creepy.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the creepiness might be based on your background? Like, I grew up where in the 50s and later there was a lot of atomic testing and we had to deal with the radiation from that even decades later. Plus with Area 51 and other large-scale military bases in the region most adults figured we'd be a prime spot for any nuclear attacks.

I'm not sure our community even had sirens installed, but I knew the sound from all the info videos we had to watch as kids and it's always been linked with the most horrific aspects of nuclear fallout for me.

Yeah... I think it's more that to me air raid sirens code as "oh shit is there an attack?" rather than creepy.
I remember one day last year when there was a siren testing or something, and I didn't know about it, so when the sirens went off I was terrified for a moment there because I thought we were actually under attack.
But I guess that's the difference in context... if I know to expect them, like on memorial day, they don't bother me.

I'm not even going to listen to that because air raid sirens freak me the fuck out. The used to run an air raid siren in my hometown every once in a while around noon and it fucked me up as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
My town still does this every day at noon. I still don't know why but it's creepy as fuck on foggy days.

Also, this is not a thing I was expecting to go on a YouTube video jump about tonight. I guess I really like sirens.

The Silent Hill ones creep me out. As does that vid/recording. GAH!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I just showed that to my dad, who was a kid in the 40s and he said it was a pretty good imitation.

The noise itself didn't creep me out, but I've never encountered an air raid siren before.

OP

Dude this is awesome! Thanks for the link!
