Can... can we not have Anne Frank be a magical girl? You know, for respect and decencies sake?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Wasn't there that well-meaning fanfic by some kid which crossed Dragon Ball Z over with Anne Frank (!) and gave her a happy ending and that fic got pilloried.

This sounds a lot worse and more disrepectful. And someone somewhere actually got paid to do it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember hearing about that. Wasn't she a Saiyan?

IIRC, the DBZ/Anne Frank story was a trollfic.

And tbh, this (the 'Anne Frank was a magical girl' thing) actually kind of makes me upset. Ughhh.

Reminds me of how I recently saw a Kuroko No Basuke fanfic that was a Schindler's List AU. :/

... I think we've found something that's about as -if not moreso- tasteless as the Supernatural RPF Haiti earthquake fic, people.

The Shingeki no Kyojin fandom has a whole rash of "Levi is a Jew during the Holocaust! [other character] is a Nazi soldier that remembers their previous life and rescues him!"

And if you dare comment on how gross and tasteless this is, they bleat about artistic freedom. Yes, please do tell me about this nuanced, artistic masterpiece of yours that the world simply cannot be without.

I don't know, if I remember correctly, there is an infamous Kingdom Hearts slash piece set during the Holocaust... with the main characters as the nazis. Yeah.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-05-16 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh LORD. It's sad that I even remember the title to that: "If I Was Your Nazi".

Apparently, the author did a pseudo-sequel with Pearl Harbor as the backdrop, but according to TV Tropes, it didn't last long on the internet. Thank goodness.

... I really want to believe the author who did those was/is a troll. I really, really do.

OP

It's tasteless as all Hell, true, but it's also kind of tasteless to turn a saint and martyr into a doomed magical girl empowered by evil aliens. Following up on the Anne Frank implication would be maximum tastelessness, rather than the medium sort of tastelessness that doesn't actually lose you paying customers. I'm pretty desensitized to medium tastelessness at this point (hello, Modern Warfare 2!), so maximum tastelessness would at least draw my attention briefly.

It's always more tasteless when Jews are involved

The whole bit about mashing it together with history was tasteless as hall hell, but overlookable. Though it did make me like the story less.

If you're talking about Jeanne d'Arc, IIRC she is not considered a martyr.

Re: OP

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-05-16 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, she is. The pope at the time (Pope Callixtus III) re-examined her trial (as iirc, the Bishop who condemned her was pro-England and bear in mind Joan was from France and had been captured) and declared her to be a martyr.

And that's just the basic explanation, too.

The Church retroactively found her innocent and declared her a saint, but she does not belong to the subcategory of saints who are officially martyrs. (The Church can make mistakes, but not martyrs.)

But if anything, it's a huge nod to how strong she was? Maybe that's just my reading of it, but I always got the implication that her and the other girls shown in that one sequence who we didn't see rescued by Madoka were ones who never reached their threshold of despair and thus never became Witches--because they could handle what they were given. They never become their enemy, which is especially amazing in Anne Frank's case given she couldn't have left to hunt down Witches for Grief Seeds to cleanse her Soul Gem and thus had to survive that entire time off of what she already had or with nothing.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Anne Frank wasn't strong. She was optimistic in the face of a terrible force which wound up killing her. She was just a girl, you don't need to add this fictional heroic rubbish to make her seem a hero.

She also had a family murdered and a father who survived and utterly devastated by the loss. There's no need to add magic powers to the mix.

We don't get to decide that she never gave in to despair.
