I completely get this. I do something very similar. If I have a nightmare about something, or I'm afraid of something, or even just bothered by something, then I seek it out. I feel a need to explore it further.

Maybe it's about trying to understand it, or to build up a tolerance to it, so that the fear goes away.

Ha, you just described me perfectly! I don't know why I seek out what frightens me, but I think it's my way of trying to desensitise myself or something.
