I have a... self harm? problem... I am not sure, but it does get worse when I am stressed and I am not sure how to stop it or how to talk about it.

I pop zits, but not just obvious ones or itchy ones. No, I actively search my body for zits to pop and even attack zits that are just raised bumps, in awkward to reach places. Something about the act itself is desirable, and when I see spots on other people I actually feel jealous because that means I can't pop it.

I have scars from this already.

IANAP but I believe the term for this is "hypergrooming"

Do you pick more when you're stressed?

Look, opinions on this differ, but imo the best fix is to find a remove (or deal differently with) the cause of your anxiety.Often the self-harm is the symptom of a problem, not the actual root problem.

It's hard to admit for me, but I did that too. I never thought about it as self-harm, though I've gotten scars too. I mostly did it because it was satisfying, but also because the more my parents harked about the problem, the more I wanted to be rid of the zits.

I don't do it as much, though. I do think it's because my environment has changed and there's no one around to make me feel self-conscious about them. It also helped that I don't get as many big ones as when I was a teenager.

I'd suggest finding products that help you get rid of the major skin problems, just so that you don't have anything big to pop out. Talk to a dermatologist if you can, so you can get rid of recurring zits. Alternatively, find a stress ball and try to get into the habit of using that.

I do the same thing but on a smaller scale. I wouldn't call it self-harm, exactly? but it is not a good habit at all.

I have the same thing, anon. It's a known thing, it's called dermatillomania, and there's a body of research about it. Mine's relatively mild, and has segued into trichotillomania as I've gotten old enough that zits just don't appear much any more. Do some reading about it, see if you find anything that helps you understand better. Good luck. :)

I have a milder case of this. Idk it's something about control and achievement? 👀 Skin care and going to the beach helps me.
