Lots of people seem to think that fanfic is terrible but once a work falls into the public domain then it's perfectly fine, which I can understand from a legal standpoint but these people are often arguing from an artistic merit standpoint. I've tried to understand where they are coming from but I haven't figured it out yet.

I suspect they're coming from the standpoint of "this thing that other people like to do for fun is lazy, uncreative and not real writing, but this virtually identical thing that I do for money is totally different and is creative, praiseworthy Real Writing." In other words, just plain old garden-variety hypocrisy.
