People who read/write/enjoy ABO and BDSM fic, I have a question!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've been wondering about this for a while and I only have a sample size of me and one friend, so...

I'd like to know, if you read/write/enjoy ABO and BDSM fic and art or AUs and fandom things and whatever - are you also in a relationship? Do you want to be in a relationship? And if you say yes to either of that, do you have or think you'd have any dynamics from ABO and BDSM fic in your actual one?

Like - to what extent is this just 'fantasy / fun' and 'something you would want'. I'm assuming no one actually wants the world to be TOTALLY RUN BY BDSM RULES, but do any bits of what you enjoy in fics which have those things make it back out to your real life interactions with other people?

TL;DR ARE YOU ALPHA OR OMEGA (or neither or whatever)

Not into Alpha/Omega, but I do enjoy the odd BDSM fic, and there was a D/s dynamic in my past relationship, though I'm not sure I'd seek it out again. I do like some kink, though. It's a difficult balance. My current bf is pretty vanilla. I just seem to go in phases, which makes things more complicated.

Well, pretty much all ABO I've ever seen is obviously confined purely to fiction because of the made-up biology stuff. Whereas BDSM is an actual thing that real people do. Not that all kink fic cares about portraying realistic BDSM, or should. I get really bored with fics that try to be realistic, honestly. I want to read lots of bizarre impossible kinks or horrible noncon and torture and so on.

In reality - I've done BDSM play with people, yeah. It's nothing like the fic I'm mostly interested in reading. But I've seen plenty of fic that is like that and I know other people in my local kink scene who like reading those more realistic type fics too.

They aren't really comparable. Unless there's a whole bunch of human biology they left out.

I'm in a relationship. Mostly we're vanilla, and in general, I'm the bossy one and "in charge", but when it comes to sexual activity I'm...I wouldn't exactly call it submissive so much as masochistic. We tried powerplay but it was rather awkward for us, especially since we're both rather aggressive, but definitely my boyfriend is aggressive with me and I'm not aggressive with him.

That said, I tend to tell people I'm submissive because explaining it in reality takes too much time and is usually TMI anyway...but no one ever believes me because I have such a domineering personality in real life. For those a little more familiar with BDSM, I apparently stick close to the stereotype of being the high-strung A-type personality in real life who uses BDSM as a release from daily HBIC life. :P

In a BDSM!AU, I'd probably be a Switch or a Domme, and in an ABO world, I'd be an Alpha - based on my day-to-day personality, anyway. I'd be that fic-stereotype of someone who struggles with my orientation/"gender" identity before finally realizing I just need to find a sub/omega/whatever who is able to play sadist so to speak, but otherwise still take directions from me. :P

I find ABO interesting primarily for the world-building, and I don't think I've ever read any full-on D/s AUs, though I have read and written fic involving BDSM. I am in a relationship, and we are kinky, but our dynamic doesn't look like much of the fic I've read (in part because het femdom fics are few and far between). We do keep a fairly bright line between "in-scene" and the rest of our lives together, which isn't very much like a lot of AUs. On the other hand, I've definitely written some of his kinks into my fics.

In answer to your TL;DR, I'm probably either a beta who acts like an alpha in the bedroom, or a very understated alpha.

I read and write BDSM fic, but it's hard to find things others have written that I could say that I "enjoy" because I'm so picky. (Picky meaning that BDSM is portrayed in at least a semi-positive light, instead of how terrible/horrible/abusive it is, and is at least relatively accurate.)

I'm not in a relationship right now, though I have been in a D/s one before. When I'm ready to go "back in the field", as it were, I'm definitely seeking something similar again.

I haven't been in a 24/7 situation, but I can easily see myself there.

Now, the little A/B/O fic I've read seems to be a kind of extreme form of some BDSM dynamics, and it does hit several of my kinks, but those happen to be of the "won't happen in real life, but I'm happy to fantasize". Because I know the dynamics as commonly portrayed in A/B/O fic can be less than healthy (I've been in co-dependent relationships before).

I'd definitely be an Omega. Happily, in fact, if it were my fantasy world. The role hits so, SO many of my kink buttons, it's not even funny.

Don't like (and am a little squicked by) ABO stuff, but I do enjoy BDSM. That is because I'm kinky in real life. Almost all my relationships contain at least some kink, usually quite a lot of it.

I guess I'm a little thrown by the question. Don't most people date based on what turns them on?
