Out of curiosity, where are you from?

I live in Belgium. I can drive for less than an our and be in another country, which is pretty cool.

Conversely, my dad once had a tale about a European (German, I think) guy he offered to drive from Sydney to somewhere like Brisbane. The poor guy was practically crawling the walls of the car because it take so damn long to get places in Australia (at least by land).

I just looked it up - that's not THAT bad. It's like 920 km. I've done even a bit more then that in a day, though it depends on road quality. But then to European standards, I'm pretty okay with long hauls. And I have no problems sleeping in cars.

I think I recall he said it was more the guy was expecting to see more than a whole stack of seemingly empty land (it probably wasn't empty, the eastern coastal regions are almost all farmland, though there's some forest stretches.

But I suppose it's a question of individual tolerances.

A lot of Europeans do have different measures for what "far" is. I go on weekends in Holland, maybe being a 2-3 hour drive and they think that's "far". It's another thing that is country-specific: perception of space and travel time.
