Yeah, like Veth said......if an American tried to do that to another American, it wouldn't go down well. It could be seen as creepy or weird or even assault. It's just not done.

Is it a European thing too though? Maybe we're the odd ones! haha

Yeah, it's pretty common, especially among friends. Though it depends on the group. Lot of hugging in some groups I'm in, but possibly that's just us. I know I'm definitely in some social groups where physical contact is at a level that goes beyond European tactileness - like cuddling/sitting on each others' laps even if you're not in a relationship. But that's not standard.

Hmm. Is everyone that tactile? I mean maybe your comfort level with that kind of affection is strongly influenced by the culture you grew up in (in fact I'm sure it is), but what if someone really doesn't want to be in that kind of position? Is it considered rude? I'm really not a tactile person beyond standard greeting gestures and maybe a comforting hug if appropriate (well, except with a bf but I don't have one of those right now, so). I dislike prolonged contact with most people - perhaps surprising considering that I'm very social. I just really like my bubble I guess!

The whole hugging/being physical among my friends is pretty optional, and you can choose not to (as my bf often does, as he's more introverted).

The kissing upon meeting thing, though - that's harder to avoid. I mean you can, but it just gets awkward. It's less awkward to just do it.

Nah, the kissing upon meeting thing doesn't bother me since I get the sense it's more about going through the motions. If people were actually literally kissing my face on a regular basis though it would probably bother me.

It's not really a thing in southwest Germany, where my best friend is from, but in France, definitely. Around Paris the norm is a kiss on each cheek, but down south where I spent a semester it's always three kisses. We Americans are the oddballs with our hugs!
