Slytherin isn't 'spectacularly evil', it's cunning and ambition, and Hufflepuff isn't 'mediocre and good', it's valuing loyalty, hardwork and fair play. Neither is better than the other. They just value different things.

I mean, you sound like a slytherin anyway. It just annoys me when people misinterpret the houses.

The reason Slytherin is considered evil is mostly the pure-blood thing. When you get a house that's filled with purity-obsessed, bigoted, elitist snobs from old, snotty, fanatically anti-crossbreeding dynasties with little blood or class diversity in the house, you're going to wind up with a culture of assholery no matter what the house's other characteristics are. If Gryffindor had a pure-blood thing, it'd be full of equally assholish people, just that their assholery would be more bloodthirsty and reckless and bullying and easily provoked and constantly getting into duels and brawls and shit instead of sneaky and oily and scheming and vicious.

The cunning and ambitious thing just happens to reinforce the whole pure-blood thing more than most other characteristics, because it means the aforementioned people are ALSO the ones naturally predisposed to be successful and amass power and wealth and gain influence in politics. It's a bad mixture.

To be fair though, most casual fans - and that may be what this person is - DO seem to think in terms of Slytherins are bad/Hufflepuffs are really nice.
