If you could

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Choose between a politician that will (and will be able to) make your country a perfect country with equal rights for everyone/health care/etc. BUT will ignore outside countries, unless they are a direct threat

Or

a politician that will ignore what's happening in their own country to help (and succeed) spreading peace/health/equality (all true versions, not just colonialism part 2.0) throughout the globe

Pretending that politics is slimmed down to make this situation make sense, which would you choose?

Re: If you could

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
the first one

Re: If you could

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The first. The second smacks of colonialism. While I think its okay to discuss other countries, ignoring the problem in one's own country. It doesn't matter if its "true version" of equality/peace/health/whatever. It is still colonialism.

This scenario doesn't really... work, even hypothetically, but just for the sake of answering...

I would pick the first, because that way you could have a nation of (hopefully) happy, healthy, well-educated people who could then go out into the world and make a difference. It's a matter of numbers, in my opinion. This politician could be the greatest person to ever live, but they're still just one person.

MTE.

In that scenario, it would have a flow-on effect. And the citizens of that country would be visibly happier, healthier and better off, and people in other countries may look at them and go: "I wish we had that!"

Whereas in the second scenario, it's only a matter of time before the whole thing starts rotting from the inside out and collapses.

First one. Unless I can move to another country. Then the second one.

The first. I wish my country would stop fucking around with other people and just mind their own damn business.

So much this. We have plenty of our own problems. Lets stop discussing human rights violations as if they are something that happens "over there." They happen all the time in the US.

Same here, word for word.

First one, yep.

Re: If you could

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What we need is someone in a really, really, really small country to pick 2.

The Vatican immediately came to mind. Then I remembered that isn't that kind of their job anyway? Not really on a political scale, though, so maybe not so much.

Second one, as long as my country keeps going like it is going now (or well was until the damn new government took over this year)...

Edit: On second thought: Second one no matter what, heck my country could burn for all I care, if the rest of the world is saved I will go down with the ship so to speak.

First one, fuck y'all

The first one. I feel politicians/government should clean up our own messes first.

Re: If you could

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What exactly does 'ignore' in the second scenario mean?

Re: If you could

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The first one.
I'd rather have some decent social services in place.

It's pretty hyprocritical to go around spreading "peace and love and democracy" when you don't have your own shit together. (Looking at you, America.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The first one. Fuck the international relations and clean up the mess back home. (not American, btw)

The first one.

Other countries are on their own.

First one. Oh boy, do we really need First One.

Re: If you could

A. All the way. Why would I want a politician that wouldn't care about anything in their own country?

First one, absolutely. I understand what you're trying to express with the 2nd option, but even if it was all kumbayah global unity etc. etc. etc. I think nations have a duty to their citizens first.

Number one. Its how I feel right now anyway. I want OUR country in a far better place and actually taking care of itself before we try and help anyone else. Its why I only donate within the country and for organizations that actually used said money for help. Otherwise? Nope.

I ignore all of the signal boosts on tumblr cause if it doesn't directly help our country, just nope. Someone else I follow will reblog it from else where and it'll spread without my help.

Colonialism 2.0 100% of the way.

I mean the way you've laid it out there, it'd be monstrous to choose anything else.

Given this choice where you have factual knowledge that those are the two alternatives, the second choice would be the only morally acceptable one.
