Me too. It just didn't click for me before Winter Soldier. Although now I can sometimes enjoy fics set during the first movie. But mostly the ship is about Winter Soldier for me.

Yeah, same. I like the angst in that dynamic, and while I do like the childhood love thing on some level, it's too sugary sweet for me most of the time.

lol one thing I personally love about pre-serum or war-time Steve/Bucky is the endless angst possibilities. If they were together, that makes them a gay couple in the 30s/40s, and later a gay couple in the military in the 40s. Then you have all the pining possibilities, or them letting each other go because it's ~for the better~, or trying to stay apart and failing. There's also the fact that Bucky had been experimented on in that HYDRA base, which brings in more angst possibilities that aren't purely relationship-related. Their story is pretty tragic all the way through.

This is some pre-serum, some war-era:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1075806/chapters/2160663 - The Howling Commandos overhear Steve and Bucky going at it. It goes about as well as you'd expect, but it gradually gets better (only it's still a fic set in canon so, you know, it ends in death and tears).

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1026648 - Pre-serum, Bucky is into the fact that Steve is a virgin. This isn't really angst per se, but it does touch on the whole "this is the 1940s I probably shouldn't be wanting to bone my male BFF" thing.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1574858 - Steve's POV, from trying to get enlisted up until just after he rescues the 107th. Deals with the effect that the torture would've had on Bucky, and how Steve deals with it. I just noticed that it's now part of a series - haven't read the second part yet, so I can't comment on that.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1583054 - This one starts in TFA-era and then goes on to post-TWS, but the premise is basically that Steve pined for Bucky first, then moved on to Peggy, and then Bucky pined for Steve.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1609811 - So Bucky tells Steve in that flashback in TWS that his parents wanted to give him a ride from the funeral, and some people decided to interpret that as his parents being undertakers, and then someone transcribed the Smithsonian exhibit which said that Bucky was the oldest of four kids, and based on all that someone wrote a fic about Bucky's family that ripped my heart out and genuinely made me cry IRL.
