How is it boring? It's only boring if you literally have NO other personality traits whatsoever. Which is bullshit. I mean, look at the range of characteristics in Ravenclaw -- Cho Chang AND Luna Lovegood? Or Gryffindor -- Hermione is super-smart and yet she's not in Ravenclaw, she's in Gryffindor. Therefore Gryffindor isn't a load of dumb reckless Vikings doing constant daredevil stunts all day. There's a lot of personality diversity.

Yes, this. Just because the only Puffs we see are the normal ones, doesn't mean there's no diversity. And JKR seemed bent on making every Ayltherin in the books a nasty person, but again, doesn't mean there aren't boring or mediocre Slytherins.

She did and didn't. I feel like part of her reason for writing in Slughorn was to try to rectify the damage she did by making them all jerks before. Now Sluggy isn't a perfect person, but he's also not a bad person. I feel like Book 6 was a little late to rectify some of that though.

...and then threw that out the window when the entire Slytherin house abandoned Hogwarts during the last battle. Thanks, Pansy.

Yeah, that wasn't well-done. :(

Of course, you could argue that it's because Minerva lost her patience with Pansy and just made them all leave.

But tbh? Whether or not it was originally this way, Slytherin had just become a breeding grounds for bigots and social elites who were afraid of breaking the status quo. It's sad, but it doesn't mean every person was evil. Much of that culture was ingrained in them, and those that didn't agree were probably afraid to speak out.

I get the sense that it didn't used to be this bad (and I'd suspect good ol' Voldy had something to do with it).

That thing with McGonagall didn't happen in the book. Only in the movie. Because the movies have never understood anything about what Harry Potter is about.

you sound bitter...

granted, you may be right about that, but I don't have a copy of the book handy to look it up.

Apparently the bit when lots of wizards arrive to help at Hogwarts happened because of the leaving Slytherins, but if it was it was really badly written :/

Tonks was in Hufflepuff and she was really fun. :)

But a mediocre auror. And I'm being nice.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you know? We never really got to see her doing Auror stuff. She had some difficult quirks, but she could very well be quite brilliant and competent enough to balance them out.
