Have you ever seen a nerd and avoided them because they're a disgusting nerd and you knew what they were talking about?

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I am the disgusting nerd, so.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
you mean like, heard someone talking about something that's creepy to talk about in mixed company? I have overheard random people in a restaurant talking about hentai like no one would know what it was... and I won't deny that I will avoid anyone over the age of about 14 who is wearing a My Little Pony shirt. But that's less because they're nerds and more because they're likely to be creeps.

Even girls?

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
DA, but

Obviously? If you've never encountered a teenager or 20-something girl going through their embarrassing nerd phase and who also has shitty social skills, you're a very lucky person

I'm 23 and I have an MLP shirt. no shame, judge away etc.

I was the original series as a kid and haven't had merch for it since I was eight, but if FiM ever brought in WindWhistler I would totally buy the hell out of it.

I'm much more likely to avoid a dude in a MLP shirt than I am a chick.

Yeah, there's this guy who's occasionally on the same bus as me who's totally a brony. Late 20s, wears all black save for the random MLP t-shirt and a Rainbow Dash cap.

I'm always careful not to bring out my laptop in front of him because its got a bunch of fandom stickers, and - even though I know it's not super likely in the slightest - the last thing I want to do is create a situation where he starts to talk to me and I have to act the "cold bitch" because all I want to do on the bus is write, and repeat awkwardness for the once a week or so I run into him onwards.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really sure. I think it would depend 100% on the person's presentation and social skills. I can't even factor in male or female, because there are creeps and super awkward, unplesasant people in both gender.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I avoid anyone with Attack on Titan stuff.

They're literally this generation's Narutards.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
really? :\ My friends are all trying to get me to watch it-- I've seen like 5 episodes but I'm bored-- but I didn't know the fandom was that bad

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Unless it's subtle, it's generally a good idea to avoid people with anime merch.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
wait they can't be this generation's Narutards because how can I belong to both generations? oh god, i'm the nerd that never grew up.

Rephrased: Have you ever overheard someone talking about a nerdy/geeky topic and avoided them because you found the topic embarrassing (or at least embarrassing to you), even though you could have contributed to the conversation?

Yes. But I'm also working on not caring so much about what other people think.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I once met a girl at a social gathering who was wearing a "Keep Calm and Ship Johnlock" t-shirt. That was a bit weird. I don't really want to know what other people ship when they're in public.

Occasionally I do run into fellow nerds who don't always have a great deal of self-awareness or social skills. I tend to avoid them.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. I can see where that might be awkward. But on the other hand, I might have been to one to awkwardly initiate a conversation about the clear superiority of Lockstrade.

Lockstrade

Sherlock/Lestrade?

Grahamlock Gavinlock Geofflock Stradelock forever!

What even is this?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd probably avoid you if this is the type of conversations you like to start.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
This goes way back when I was like... 11? I heard some boys in my choir argue about dragonball Z, which I was like deeply into at the time (as in, possesed almost all the manga and watched the original dragonball run again and again and again for years ecetera...). And what they were discussing just made me so embarassed for them and their less then stellar canon knowledge that I felt just soo much shame.

Meaning, yes I avoided them but because they weren't nerdy enough and I was an elitist little shit (and rightly so).

You must be new here.

Constantly. Judging is how I've learned to survive.

Re: ...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. Are they the disgusting sort of nerd with zero social awareness/skills? Then yes, I'll avoid them.

But if they're an average sort of person having a conversation about something nerdy, I'll probably see if I can join in.

Re: ...

ABSOLUTELY

motherfuckers talking about goddamn transformers porn behind me on the fucking bus, god damn
