So, my best friend is moving abroad - and I'm excited and sad for her all at once.

Not really sure if this is the place for it, but you're all pretty nice people here and I don't always have someone to tell these thing to.

I never much believed in the whole "BFF OMG besties", but this girl and I have been friends since our teens, can tell each other pretty much anything, have traveled halfway around the world together without annoying each other too much. I think she might be what people call a "best friend".

And she's moving away in about two months. Her plan in half a year initially, but she might stay if she likes it. I understand her reasons for doing it. I fully support it (even though her mom would have liked me to talk her out of it) because I think at this point in time, it's probably a good idea.

She's clean-slating: I've done this once before also, and know that sometimes it's the kindest thing you can do for yourself. And I'm sure she'll have great adventures. And I'm happy for her.

But I'm also...sad, because I won't be part of that.

Sure I can fly over, but it's not the same - it takes money and time - can't just hang out at her house whenever.

It's funny, cause only today I told her that, and that I consider her my best friend. And she pretty much feels the same and that's all sort of wonderful, because I don't think I've ever been anyone else best friend before. But, now I'm just sort of double sad.

I also know that when I was starting over, a lot of my old friends just disappeared out of my life. Because that's just how it goes, but I don't want that to happen.

My life is..sort of weird right now. Lots of things changing, lost a lot of people lately. Not really looking for advice, just wanted to vent a bit...

E-hug?

I know that you said "not looking for advice", but, well, all of my best friends are at least a few miles away, and they vary from "keep in touch via skype" to "Still awesome friends when we get to see each other". I wouldn't be surprised if something like that applied in your case.

Not advice really, but most of my friends live 6 hours away from me and we manage quite well, unlimited calling cell phone coverage, skype, twitter and snapchat is what keeps us close and whenever we actually manage to meet up it is like nothing has changed.

So you two will be okay, I am sure of it!

I am also sorry that you have to go through it, it isn't fun.

*hugs*

I'm in a similar situation. I don't use the term without scare quotes because I doubt people will take me seriously if I do, but I have someone I could call my "BFF". We've known each other since childhood and they're like a sibling to me, and now they're going to be moving across the ocean. It's a bit silly, since I hardly ever actually see them anymore now that we're busy adults, but the thought of it is daunting.

Change can be terrifying and depressing, especially if it involves a loved one who you spend a good deal of time with and have bonded with. It's unfortunate you guys are going to live so far apart, but at the same time if you care about each other and want to keep in contact there are other options! It doesn't have to be the end of your friendship. (Granted, it might be the end of your friendship as you know it, but relationships change, as do all things. It doesn't necessarily have to be negative?). It might take more effort to keep in touch, but if you do I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Good luck with everything! I hope it works out for both of you.

I'm planning to keep contact, obviously. Not sure how it will work out, but we're creative people. It's just the sort of change that makes me sad, ya know?

Yea, don't get me wrong, I get it. Change isn't easy and you're allowed to be sad about it. You did sound uncertain that the two of you might always keep in touch though, so I just wanted to try to assure you it was possible. It's not fun to have to adapt to a changing relationships or circumstances, but even so I'm sure you'll manage it! She probably has the same fears and worries.

Aww :( *hugs* that's rough! Someone I consider to be one of my best friends let me know recently that she's going to go to grad school across the country from me soon. It's a really sad feeling. *hugs again*
