So, my best friend is moving abroad - and I'm excited and sad for her all at once.
I never much believed in the whole "BFF OMG besties", but this girl and I have been friends since our teens, can tell each other pretty much anything, have traveled halfway around the world together without annoying each other too much. I think she might be what people call a "best friend".
And she's moving away in about two months. Her plan in half a year initially, but she might stay if she likes it. I understand her reasons for doing it. I fully support it (even though her mom would have liked me to talk her out of it) because I think at this point in time, it's probably a good idea.
She's clean-slating: I've done this once before also, and know that sometimes it's the kindest thing you can do for yourself. And I'm sure she'll have great adventures. And I'm happy for her.
But I'm also...sad, because I won't be part of that.
Sure I can fly over, but it's not the same - it takes money and time - can't just hang out at her house whenever.
It's funny, cause only today I told her that, and that I consider her my best friend. And she pretty much feels the same and that's all sort of wonderful, because I don't think I've ever been anyone else best friend before. But, now I'm just sort of double sad.
I also know that when I was starting over, a lot of my old friends just disappeared out of my life. Because that's just how it goes, but I don't want that to happen.
My life is..sort of weird right now. Lots of things changing, lost a lot of people lately. Not really looking for advice, just wanted to vent a bit...

I know that you said "not looking for advice", but, well, all of my best friends are at least a few miles away, and they vary from "keep in touch via skype" to "Still awesome friends when we get to see each other". I wouldn't be surprised if something like that applied in your case.

So you two will be okay, I am sure of it!
I am also sorry that you have to go through it, it isn't fun.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)I'm in a similar situation. I don't use the term without scare quotes because I doubt people will take me seriously if I do, but I have someone I could call my "BFF". We've known each other since childhood and they're like a sibling to me, and now they're going to be moving across the ocean. It's a bit silly, since I hardly ever actually see them anymore now that we're busy adults, but the thought of it is daunting.

Sorry to hear it.

Good luck with everything! I hope it works out for both of you.
