I get that, but in a job like animation? Don't people compete to get into jobs like that? It's not like it's their only option. I find it hard to believe that people would continue to work in a job that pays them so little if they're smart/talented enough to have options.

...then again, maybe because it's so competitive, people will work for so little because they will be easily replaced? hm. I dunno a lot about this industry.

So yeah. Maybe you're right. If so, that's awful. Is that a Japan thing in general or just the industry (if you know)?

It's a Japan thing. I worked in the Japanese automobile industry for a while and while I can't speak to whether there's any truth to the low wages part, I can say that the insane work hours is an overall cultural thing.

When many people work in the same industry, the wages are bound to be low because there's just that many people capable to do the same job and being smart/talented doesn't make a big difference unless they're famous, because there are other smart/talented people in the same situation.

AFAIK the voice acting industry en Japan has the same issue with the wages, but not with the working hours.
Still, most voice actors earn most of their income in the events, releasing CDs and so on, instead of their main work.
