I liked the idea of Steve/Bucky after I saw the first film but it didn't properly click for me until after TWS, now I'm eating up all the fic for it, pre-movies and post-TWS, it's all good.

I get you on the Steve/Tony thing too, totally ship 'em in the comics but in the movies it isn't the same. That and I totally dig Tony/Pepper in the MCU.

I just love that I have so many ships in this fandom, keeps me happy.

"I will let you kill me if it helps" kind of sets the ship gears grinding a bit more than "let's go on a double date", yup!

(Although Bucky spent a lot of time in tFA looking at Steve like he was the center of his universe)

Haha, that is very true. The angst factor is also a big pull for me and Steve undoing 70 years of brainwashing by saying Bucky' s name once.

(I'd agree with you, I am biased in the matter though :P)

To be fair, while I shipped them mildly during tFA, I only started shipping them after contemplating the H/C potential of post-tortured Bucky. Then the entire distressing mess that is the Winter Soldier came out and everything started buzzing and I think I fell in love with both Bucky and Sebastian Stan, which doesn't help matters at all

(nothing wrong with bias! :) )

Well, Steve also mounts a one-man rescue mission - with no prior experience in actual combat - on the miniscule chance that Bucky is still alive, and I have no doubt he would've actually attempted to walk there if Peggy hadn't gotten Howard to give them a ride. He's always been irrational when it comes to Bucky, but maybe the insanity of his rescue misson in TFA wasn't really stressed so people missed that.

Forgot to add - with no prior experience in actual combat, and also going against direct orders of his superior and being completely prepared to get court martialled for it. All that on the off chance that he might get Bucky back.

I love Tony/Pepper in the MCU, far more than I care for Steve/Tony nowadays.

Tony/Pepper is the best! I wasn't really expecting it but I love it now we have it. I still like Steve/Tony in the comics but finding fic for it that isn't movie-verse these days for those two can be tricky.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I mean, I barely remember my reaction to the first movie, but I didn't really go out and seek fic even though my slash goggles were on by then. But after TWS it was like "Yeah, WOW" (although TWS also brought a love for Steve/Sam with it), helped by all the things that fandom posts on tumblr, little break-downs of scenes and details that I missed completely (like, say, the love song playing when Bucky and Steve see each other for the first time in TWS).

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
wait, what? a love song? i've been reading meta for the last couple of days in my spare moments, but i haven't seen that one. can you tell me more?

When Steve goes into his apartment to find Fury there with the record player on, the song playing throughout the scene (which is the first scene where Steve sees Bucky) is an old post-WWII song called "It's Been A Long Long Time"--a song about a person welcoming their lover home from the war.

"Kiss me once and kiss me twice and kiss me once again. It's been a long, long time...."

i went to see the movie three times, and it didn't register at all, well done, self. but omg, thanks for the info, it's not like i needed any more reason to cry about those two.

Yeah I liked it but the need to search for fic didn't hit me like after TWS, but now I find myself reading everything no matter when it's set.(Steve/Sam is a fantastic choice too!). Tumblr is great for spurring shipping feelings along. :D

OP

yeah, i totally get that. and i hear you on tony/pepper. i love her with happy in the comics, but she is so great with tony in the mcu. then again, it's pepper, so she's great anyway, and, good god, the amount of love i have for all the ladies in this universe is ridiculous. (one of the reasons i enjoyed catws so much - the amazing character development that natasha got. and her developing friendship with steve was a thing of beauty.)

Yup agreed, Pepper is fantastic regardless of who she's with and I like the differences of both relationships in their own settings. I'm the same, lots of the MCU ladies are brilliant and I want to see more of them, and more added from the comics too.(A big resounding YES to this, I mean I love that it gave me Steve/Bucky as something I really like but I also love, love, love how it developed Natahsa more. She deserves it. I want to see more of Sam too in later films because I really loved all of the characters and interpersonal relationships in TWS.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I love Natasha in TWS so fucking much. The more I think about what they did with her character, the more things I find to love. Actually the movie was overall a really solid character piece for a superhero movie. I love that when you look at how their relationships with Steve develop, Sam got what would usually be the "girlfriend" role while Natasha got what would usually be the "male sidekick" role - and Steve never once treats her any differently than he would a male colleague. I love that the Steve/Natasha relationship was one of the most important ones in the movie, but they didn't need to make Natasha a love interest for that. I love that it's Natasha who makes the superhero choice of putting the greater good above her own interests when she releases all the information and blows all her covers. And I love how human all these characters are. Steve is the emotional center with his somewhat subtle but soul-crushing loneliness, and there's Natasha who sees that and tries to help in her own way by playing matchmaker and eventually becomes Steve's friend herself, and then Sam as an example that it's possible to go through trauma and come out bruised but fine on the other side. And Bucky's complete breakdown on the helicarrier gets me every time. I could talk about how perfect the characters in this movie were all day.

I'm usually the kind of person who likes to have a ship in the fics I'm reading, but I can honestly say I'd read 100k of gen fic about the adventures of Steve, Natasha, Sam and Bucky.
