Their head of house was also a man who gave up his life and so much more to atone for his past actions. But let's forget that pesky detail, shall we?

Gave up his life how? If he hadn't gone to Dumbledore, he would have been locked away in Azkaban for being a Death Eater after Voldemort fell. Instead, he got to live in a castle, using his power to make kids miserable. All because he was obsessed with a woman who wanted nothing to do with him.

The only past action he wanted to atone for was the fact that he wasn't able to save Lily. We never see remorse for anything he'd done as a Death Eater. He didn't atone, he just picked the winning side.

It's exactly that kind of cutthroat maneuvering that has a certain appeal in some circles.
