Ah, Mary Sue. Possibly ended up ruining potentially good female characters imho... because seriously, you can't win. Too happy? Mary Sue. Too sad? Mary Sue. Just don't read fics with OCs in them.

Yeah it seems like that with people who are too quick to use the term. I do believe at ONE point it had meaning. But by now it's been diluted, often by people who just cannot tolerate the mere notion that other people like the character they hate or feel the need to justify their dislike with "omg but this character is actually a really bad character and THAT'S why I hate them. and you should too".

As someone who writes with OCs, I'd much rather someone who really can't stand them just not read my fics. It's why I warn. Because I want to save us both the headache.

And probably scared off many a good fanfic writer from even trying to create their own OCs for fear of being attacked for writing them and having a 'Mary Sue/Gary Stu.'

Yeah. I just hate how it feels like so many people are so over wary about creating a Mary Sue because of the misinformation spread about it. And if people understand what the REAL problems with a Mary Sue type character are (not the Common Sue Trait shit), they probably wouldn't make one.
