I generally think your opinion of the houses is very skewed, but then I agree with those who say that JKR did not do a great job showing Slytherin as anything but a bunch of bratty, wannabe evil, stuck-up snots, and Hufflepuff as an insular bunch of "duffers" (to quote Hagrid's opinion of them). She said Slyths were "cunning and ambitious", but examples like Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson didn't show much cunning, and most of the time we saw bits of Hufflepuff loyalty, the one they were closing ranks against was Harry, our POV character. That does not give a positive view of Hufflepuff loyalty, and frankly we never really saw any example of their "hard-working" either.

So while I'd like to think Slytherin is not evil, and Hufflepuff is not mediocre, (and Ravenclaws were more than just self-interested bullies) JKR failed to really show them well.
