It has a fairytale-like quality in my imagination. Probably too much Friends as a kid. :)

It' works for some people, but I don't think it's anything like Friends. There's no way 20 somethings could afford the apartments they had in that show.

The show even acknowledged that, IIRC. They were all basically squatting, and there was an episode where they nearly got caught.

also, New York is a lot more ethnically mixed than Friends.

If you're not living there already, try London. Not quite as drastic, and London is also the kind of city where you just stay.
