I have a desperate love of special effects and lighting and cinematography, and all the craftsman sort of elements of live action media. There's a special place in my heart in particular for low-budget efforts where they're visibly trying to make the most of whatever little they have, even if they don't quite succeed. My enjoyment of those elements is usually completely separate from my enjoyment of the story.

However, there are times when they just do something so badly that it breaks my suspension of disbelief and nothing else. Bad lighting in particular does that to me. Older shows that were broadcast live tend to run afoul of that a bit. I remember a particularly bad episode of Wild Wild West where they had the shadow of the lamp that was supposed to be throwing the light being thrown back against the person holding it for a full five minutes, visibly being lit by a stage spot, and I just couldn't hold on to the story at all. I forgave the show, because it generally tried and I enjoyed it so much, but that episode just doesn't scan, even still.

Sometimes elements just catch you, and once you see them it's so hard to ignore them again afterwards.
