I haven't read the books - does he ever actually just help people? Or at least not actively hurt them? Because I'm wondering a) how he became a psychiatrist and b) just how stupid the police are.

In the first book, Hannibal's already into custody. We only have some ideas of what happened before that. It doesn't look like he was trying to really help anyone, though.

Heh yeah I did know that part (from watching the films) so I should have said 'did'. Alana respects him in the show so I assume he must have proved his abilities in non-murderous ways at some point.

Those he essentially deemed genuine he most likely helped. He'd been in practice for years, or at least, that's what the impression is in the book. Those he deemed last causes or incredibly rude, he killed or maimed.

At least, that's the impression I got, cause he did host a lot of professional parties and stuff and had a large clientele.

"Saving lives is just as arousing as ending them."

Since he's got a pretty good reputation amongst other psychiatrists, then I'd say he probably did prove his abilities at one point. We just get to see the murdery bits.

In the book (and judging by the orchestra episode also in the show) he befriends wealthy patients and persuades them into leaving him all their money, so I presume that he at least is helpful/kind towards them.
