The Battle Sylph has some really awesome ideas--I rec it even to fantasy fans who don't normally read romance. Kudos to the author for recognizing that the setting could have come off as sexist, and explicitly denying characters' expectations that all guys or all girls are a certain way. (I hear the sequels descended into sex for sex's sake, though.)

It's geared more toward the YA audience, but the protagonist is an ambitious student looking to enter the world of professional photography. Likewise, the ending is not what would you normally expect in a romance novel. It's realistic yet happy. I read the first edition years ago, but it has been reprinted and can also be purchased at the Kindle store.
