Romance novel recs

That aren't about a willful woman who just wants to be tamed by the right man. I want to read a love story but it seems like most of them follow that theme.

I liked Lips Touch: Three Times, although it's kind of flowery poetic and focuses more on plot than romance. But it comes with illustrations that are super pretty!

Thanks!

Can you be more specific? Are you looking for modern romance, regency romance, genre-crossing romance, some other romance? Because otherwise that's a lot of books to go through.

Sorry, I really don't have a preference for any of those! I was just looking for what I said. You definitely don't have to go through all your books for me. If you can't think of any, that's fine.

People seem to really like The Sharing Knife, though I was kind of eh on it. It definitely has an FMC who gets stronger rather than weaker as the story progresses.

The Battle Sylph has some really awesome ideas--I rec it even to fantasy fans who don't normally read romance. Kudos to the author for recognizing that the setting could have come off as sexist, and explicitly denying characters' expectations that all guys or all girls are a certain way. (I hear the sequels descended into sex for sex's sake, though.)

Have you ever stopped by Smart Bitches, Trashy Books? That site might be up your alley and should have some items that meet those requirements.

If you're pressed for time or don't want to page through the Smart Bitches archives, there is Thwonk! It's geared more toward the YA audience, but the protagonist is an ambitious student looking to enter the world of professional photography. Likewise, the ending is not what would you normally expect in a romance novel. It's realistic yet happy. I read the first edition years ago, but it has been reprinted and can also be purchased at the Kindle store.

I have, after I saw it recced here, but something in one of their posts made me angry (I'd rather not elaborate). I suppose I could check it out again and just be more careful but I think I have enough to start with. Thanks!

The Duchess War, by Courtney Milan. I have problems with a lot of romance tropes, and this book impressed the hell out of me.
