Re: Sorry to derail your secret, OP, but how about a rec thread?

As a Utilitarian, I should NOT be saying this, but is no one actually being hurt by these fics really the point at issue? I've spilled a lot of ink trying to put myself back together, using my stories to outline the slow path to making it hurt less, as part of attempting to follow that path myself. When Skippy mocked these fics as being about cocoa and backrubs, and Solti said that was "delicious" and what he wanted, I literally, physically felt sick to my stomach. (And yes, h/c fic isn't really about recovery, but that seems an awful lot like the logic behind "Yaoi can stereotype gay guys because it's really about women, not gay guys," and most folks don't seem to find that convincing.)

Oh God, I feel so whiny for posting this. I don't mean to talk about me and my issues all the time; I just feel like I should bring them up when relevant because so many people are ashamed or embarrassed to admit they're not perfectly fine.

Well, I guess a better way to phrase it would be this way:

No one is actually being tortured, having violence committed against them, or otherwise targeted because of torture fic in general.

I absolutely understand that psychological damage from reading or writing these can be very real. But no one is being forced to read or write these, and people can incur psychological damage from reading just about anything that doesn't mesh well with their mental state, not just torture fic. I mean, I can read the most graphic torture fic and be fine whereas someone else can be given panic attacks and nightmares about that. Conversely, even minor or vague self-harm can be dicey territory for me, whereas most people I know are fine reading that.

So psychological damage just from reading or writing these things is not really what I mean when I say "no one's getting hurt", because generally reading and writing these is something you actively choose to do (not counting people reading a fic that didn't have trigger warnings on it - but that's another issue entirely).

Also, don't worry about "talking too much about your issues". I wish people would talk about themselves more so the rest of us reading their posts would know where they are coming from, what the connotations behind their words are, etc. I absolutely get that reading or writing such fics can be intensely personal and something that affects one's mental journey. It's just that in that respect, torture fic is not much different than any other kind of fic - a lot of people use writing (and/or reading) as a way of dealing with personal issues, and it's far from limited to torture fic, angst, whump, h/c, etc. - these are just the genres that tend to 'bear the load' of personal impact more than other genres.
