Man, that sucks. Being an editor sounds like such a hard and, to be a bit melodramatic, thankless job to me.

Honestly I do really enjoy it. It's a natural strength of mine and I like the feeling of improving and helping in the same ways that I hope someone will help my own work. I just struggle to turn off that part of my brain when I'm reading for fun, so I can't really enjoy less-than-great-quality fiction anymore. But I think I would encounter the same thing even as I learned more about editing my own work - I'm just bound to be super critical now. At the same time, I do think I notice and appreciate some details that a typical reader won't. So it might be a trade-off.
