Actually, I quite like the braids, I just loved the evidence that apparently Nori's fantastic updo is in no way waterproof and will in fact become a sad, floppy birds-nest under turbulence. I think I just like the idea that dwarves have bad hair days, and all the careful braiding in the world won't save you when you have to go over a few waterfalls in a barrel.

I loved seeing that too - both him and Dori. I just love the realism that their hair won't stay perfect.
