Yeah, I was wondering this too. I mean, I've come across a few people who claim they have X mental condition but take zero responsibility for their actions, and yes, they've been called on it. However, I've never seen someone get insulted or bullied for mental illness simply for mentioning they have it, myself included.
But, like you, I've probably gotten lucky. Or maybe not so much luck as a conscious decision as to what company I surround myself with and what people and places I avoid.

The idea that people claim to have a disability so they can get away with bad behavior really annoys me. Dyspraxia has mental aspects and a huge effect on how I think, but it doesn't stop me from taking responsibility for things.

Then again, I have a sneaking suspicion I would have been an ass if I wasn't dyspraxic.

Plus, I know some incredibly nice and polite autistic people.
