Favourite Anime Movie?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Just watched Perfect Blue for the first time, which was a pretty wow experience and was wondering if anyone else had any anime films that they'd enjoyed that weren't the typical Ghibli stuff?
Or a Perfect Blue discussion, I'm happy with that lol

I don't have a favorite anime movie, but I do remember staying up for hours watching the Galaxy Express 999 movie thing on SciFi so many years ago and being sucked into that.

My favorite anime movie is Tokyo Godfathers. God, I'm so sad Satoshi Kon will never make another movie. He was a fabulous director.

I haven't seen it in a while but I remember loving The Place Promised in Our Early Days. Paprika is a favorite of mine too.

Millennium Actress (which I finally watched in order to write a Yuletide treat last year) entirely blew me away.

Also ... Voices from a Distant Star. *sob*

Someone rec Magnetic Rose, and we'll have Satoshi Kon's complete filmography. (Personally, my favorite's Paprika.)

"I am here."

*chokes back sobbing, asks to shower early to hide bawling as others at sleepover remain unimpressed, put on Sandra Bullock-Hugh Grant romcom shortly thereafter*

You could watch the rest of Satoshi Kon - Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Paranoia Agent (13 episode series)

The Girl WHo Leapt through Time (2006) is pretty good.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices by Makoto Shinkai. I'll never stop stannin for it, it's beautiful. I'd put it on the same tier as Spirited Away.

Summer Wars! I've watched it so many times, I have parts of the dialogue memorized. In Japanese. :3 F!s is how I learned of the film, too!

Oh my God, Perfect Blue. I knew the twist going in, but even still that movie was kind of a mind fuck.

Because Kon always makes me think of experimental stuff: Mind Game! I had gotten a physical copy online, not realizing it was a bootleg... But it was ridiculously fun and strange, and there are YouTube clips around. The director also has a Kickstarted short, Kick Heart :)

Also have a soft spot for the trippy Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer (written and directed by Mamoru Oshii, who later did Ghost in the Shell), and the anthology Robot Carnival.

Robot Carnival! I'd almost forgotten that. It was so weird and trippy in places. Well, most places, really. The 'Nightmare' short, wow.

Thanks for the reminder!

I'll always have a soft spot for Galaxy Express 999. I first watched it when I was 12 and the idea of riding a train through space just blew me away. It has some very odd plot and characterization moments, though, that I can't really ignore and keep it from being my definitive favorite.

I love Ghost in the Shell (the original movie) and it's easily my favorite piece of cyberpunk media. In particular, from the beginning of the fight with the tank to the end of the movie is just riveting. And, it's the only time I've not been annoyed by Mamori Oshii's philosophising.

Not really any favorites per se, but I did like the Escaflowne movie, mainly for the Van/Hitomi from the start, unlike the annoying Allen/Hitomi crush that never could be in the anime (i love the anime tho).

Endless Waltz...ok, yeah, THAT is my favorite anime movie forever.

I enjoyed the Wolf Children movie, surprisingly. I got sad and oh my god the kids and augh. D:

Most Ghibli films of course.

The Sailor Moon S movie is a favorite, yes. Best of the three, imo.
