Honestly, I think Harry Potter fandom spoiled people (myself included) for how most fandoms are. I mean, I think even for the way fandoms were in 2004ish, fandom tends to be much quieter and less interactive, but Harry Potter fandom basically had fandoms within the fandom. There was the LJ fandom, the FictionAlley fandom, the Sugar Quill fandom, Mugglenet fandom... you could always find something for you there. I don't think most fandoms were ever like that, with the possible exception of Star Trek and Star Wars. Possibly. So people used to that sort of fandom have gone from one extreme to the other. :/

I'm in a closed fandom now, and before then the last two books came out about twelve and nine years apart (respectively), so it was always a bit closed. And it really worked well - we had wank but it got resolved.
