It always feels like people are pissed we don't have the ~OMG popular~ villains out in the forefront, or that our hero doesn't spent 99% of the time angsting.

I have read a lot of scathing reviews of the film, and you're the first person I've seen who's mentioned either of those things, so I don't know where you're getting "always" from.
