That's scary. People need to back away from the internet when it comes to that point.

As someone who lives vicariously through fandom a good deal - not through shipping but through things like writing and reading about strong friendships - a lot of fandom is wishful thinking. That's why people connect to characters sometimes. As long as they're not insisting that the RL partners/spouses of their favourite RPS ship are beards and refusing to see all reason, I really don't think it's all that unusual.
