I'll chime in with the Fushigi Yugi OAV (it's shoujo). The original manga run was 18 volumes and IIRC, only the first 13 were used for the anime adaptation. They released the OAVs based on the last volumes of the manga and I think some of the episodes were based on the novels published.

So mostly the OAVS took a fairly faithful adaptation from manga to anime and just expanded on what was missing in the TV series run.

Are you counting Eikoden in that? Because that was terrible.

No, not Eikoden. That's because Eikoden was based on the novels published after FY finished.
