hm. I liked snape when the first book came out in my country.
I didn't like the movie casting when the first movie came out (back then I was about 12), didn't know Rickman, and would have liked someone ... darker. (also, they pettied up some other guys so why not him?) I have since come to love Rickman and his portrayal of snape, but I never get why people think that the actor first made snape popular.
(Also, I don't know about other people but I trusted Dumbledore enough that after the first time Snape was revealed as "good" at the end of the first book, I never doubted him again. Him looking thoughtfully at Harry for a long time at the end of book one already gave me the Snape/Lilly vibes, because it suggested that he saw something in him that had to do with his own past. )
