...this is controversial?

I mean in some places, maybe, but here?

Unfortunately I know some very intelligent people who think that things like seal culls and deer hunting aren't necessary. They just don't get that we've fucked the natural world up enough in America and Europe that these populations can't regulate themselves any more.

Weren't wolves reintroduced to Yellowstone precisely to control the deer that were killing the ecosystem there?

My least favorite is when people say wolves shouldn't be introduced because "they'll kill deer".

That's one of the BEST reasons to introduce them, tbh.

Here in the UK it's "they'll kill livestock". Which is probably a more valid concern.

True, and that is more of a concern. There are things that can be done, though.

here's my controversial thought about animals, wolves are fucking awesome and they get a bad rap. Bears are way more dangerous to humans and way too many people give bears a pass because they think they're cute.

I guess it depends on where you are. Part of the problem with some animals like deer is that they in populated areas so hunting is a lot more dangerous - not only for the deer but for the people walking around in the areas near the woods.

One the other hand, there are often a larger number of car-on-deer collisions which usually don't end well for the drivers (or the deer for that matter). I am no fan of sport hunting, but I do think that at times they are needed to control the population. It is better for everyone.

yeah, deer-car collisions are great for exactly nobody.

I am not a huge fan of sport hunting but when it comes to deer sometimes it's the only option. :| It isn't going to make me respect sport hunters, though. I'm at least okay with people who kill deer and then actually use the body - eat the meat, use the skin (or sell it), etc. instead of just putting up a trophy and throwing the carcass away

I read an article recently about an official deer cull (as in, by Park Rangers or something, I think?) where they donated the meat to a bunch of homeless shelters.

My dad's into all that reality TV stuff (not Big Brother or Survivor, but things like Operation Repo, American Guns, Pawn Stars etc), and one of the shows he was into at one point was about wild boar hunters in one of the southern states. It seemed like a lot of the meat they didn't use themselves got taken down to homeless shelters for their use.
