I dunno, I hate being around assholes. But I hate being around needy, clingy, food-obsessed and sometimes smelly people more, which is how dogs come off to me :D

In all honesty, I just kind of get cats. I won't pretend mine doesn't get hella annoying when she whines for attention, though.

That...describes some dogs, but not all or even most.

If you don't want a clingy/needy dog, for example, avoid golden retrievers and probably labs...but there are plenty of breeds that are pretty independent, and also a lot of variation within breeds (example: we have two greyhounds who are pretty much opposites - one is pretty content to be by herself most of the time while the other whines at annoying times and follows my mom everywhere)

Sure, I know there's variation, but it's clear to me they're just not my animal. I like greyhounds best, in my experience. I phrased my comment the way I did because I currently live with a dog my dad got a few years back (treeing feist/rat terrier) and she's gone from bad to worse in terms of clinginess and food obsession and I'm so frustrated with my parents giving her constant table scraps. Cats just work better with my personality in general, no matter how well behaved the dog.

I had a dog that was pretty independent. Except for walks, he sort of did his own thing, and despite looking like a teddybear, he was only sporadically cuddle-able.
