I had a friend in high school (who went to a different high school than I did; we met through church) who was so thin and lanky that none of the shorts in the brand she was required to wear met the "fingertip length" rule for her. Rather than force her daughter to wear pants year-round in the Arizona desert, her mother -- who was one of the strictest people I have ever met in every other respect -- allowed her to buy brand-name castoffs at the thrift store and sew their labels into shorts that actually fit her comfortably.
