Given how hostile the internet is with regards to the issue, sometimes I'm caught off guard by how the people at my school are ridiculously accepting of nonbinary identities and won't even blink when I mention my pronouns. Then again, you can major in social justice here, so...

Idk, people are way more compliant in irl because there's more consequences to being a dick.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's great to hear! I'm glad you go to a school where people are accepting.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like my old school :)

major in social justice here

Wait, as in actual college or university? That has got to be the most useless major ever, when it comes to employment.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on what you're looking to do. I can think of some places that would like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. As useless as Women's Studies or Queer Studies, etc.

That being said, they are a nice "complement" major - if they go with something else. Business, law, and so on.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily? If you want to work in certain areas of the nonprofit sector or social work (for example), it can be a good way to make connections, learn a specialized vocabulary, become an "insider" -- just like a lot of other majors.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, where I live there's a major that's actually more useful for that since it also makes it much easier to get connections in those communities with parts of the requirements to graduate. So...here, it would actually end up being pretty useless in the majority of cases.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough -- I don't know your school. But I don't think it's "useless" to major in something you like, either -- the social justice major might serve a similar purpose less efficiently, but suit some people's personality and interests better. Whatever works.

you can major in social justice here,

IT'S SPREADING NOOOOOOOOOOOO

D-:

It was a thing before tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Not exactly social justice, but gender issues has been a major at my uni for close to 40 yrs.

Sometimes I like to imagine the look of horror that would come over the faces of people who think social justice was invented by tumblr when I pass by the city's Social Justice Center on the bus.
