Creating fanworks for small, obscure fandoms

Anyone else does this to please yourself and satisfy your obsession, even if your potential audience is non-existent?

Yep, often. Sometimes I truly just write it for myself -- i.e. I don't even post it online -- but once in a while I'll throw it up on AO3 or my LJ. I've been pleasantly surprised in the past, so it's worth taking a chance sometimes (just saying, y'know, if you're debating whether or not to post a fic you've written)!

Yup.

ABCFITOF

Always be creating fanworks in tiny obscure fandoms

it is an extremely pro move

Yes! People even read them sometimes if they're NC-17.

Yep yep! For some reason one of them is still getting reviews at a fairly steady rate, even though (or maybe because) it's a WIP I haven't updated in two and a half years. I'm up to 46 now. I didn't know there were 46 people in the fandom to begin with. XD

Yeah ... after asking (and never getting) certain stories for years, I've started just writing them myself.

No, because I don't have a creative bone in my body. I'm always on the lookout for new stuff to get into. So, name your small, obscure fandoms people and maybe we can fangirl over them together. Name them so other people can give them a shot and they can get more love/fans.

Why not? Even when I make things for big fandoms it's mostly to please myself and get the idea out, not for any potential audience. So it's the same for tiny fandoms.

I definitely participate in Yuletide because it's so much fun. I'd say that is pleasing to myself. C:

My WIP is a crossover of one small and one obscure fandom. I definitely am writing that one for myself, because I want to. I'm thrilled if it earns a hit a week! :D Or maybe even a KUDO! *gasp of shock*

Yep - and I got a friend-for-life out of it, as well as a hobby for life.

I did once. The fandom in question was introduced to me by a Let's Play; it's a text adventure called Jigsaw, it's apparently notoriously hard, and I ended up playing through it by literally typing word-for-word what the walkthrough I found said. The LPer found the fic a while after I posted it, actually, and I think that's where its sole kudos came from. It also appears to be the only fanfic in existence for the fandom, so I got to boost AO3's fandom count.

boosting AO3's fandom count is great!

*raises hand* This is my life, pretty much. I write for myself, and tbh, it's nice not having the pressure of knowing you have readers who may not always agree with some of the weird fic ideas I have. Also, my fandoms are too obscure for Yuletide, so. :D

Re: Creating fanworks for small, obscure fandoms

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-05-21 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! I have a fandom of two, you can't get smaller. My fic is at a 'to be continued some time this century' stage. I can make a wallpaper or fanart for a fandom of one, that is, for myself, but not a fic.

One of them was Canadian tv series Guard, another Plunkett & Macleane.

If I were in a fanwork-creating mood, I would do this all day, every day.

I feel like this is often the ONLY thing I end up being interested in. Long forgotten circles that I still love every bit as much as I did back in the day.
