Have any sources to back that up? They probably didn't clean their teeth or take care of them that much, even if their diet didn't contain all the shit we eat today. Either way, he probably would have had bad breath.

Not sure about cleaning their teeth, but the idea is based on indigenous tribes not getting cavities, or other really serious dental decay problems, until after they get onto a "Western" diet. There are also some theories that "natural" tooth cleaners like charcoal, or plants with saponins in them, etc., might have been used, by indigenous tribes, anyway.

There might be something to the theory, or it might not be even remotely plausible, IDK.

No worries. I didn't read any hostility from you. I think there may have been studies done on the Amazonian tribes (Yanomami?), hope that helps with your search, have fun!

SA

Regarding the tooth-cleaning, I have read that charcoal was used, ca. 19th century or so, not sure if it would have been employed any further back. There are plants that have saponins in them (where we get some modern soaps from), but whether or not they were used extensively, I'm not sure.

I dimly recall reading somewhere (can't think of the source offhand) that Romans stored urine and dried it out to make "homemade" bleach (i.e. ammonia) for laundry purposes. I don't recall if they had the ability/knowledge to make soap (lye+ashes) back then or not.
