It irritates me because it's a phrase that implies everyone has a childhood home available to them. If by some miracle either of my parents were stable enough to house me, it still wouldn't be "home".

Yeah, even though my parents are stable enough to house me if I needed it (and didn't mind sleeping in the living room) it's not in any of my childhood homes.

That too. My parents' home just isn't "home" anymore. If I were to go back to live with them for some reason, it would be "going to live with my parents" not "going back home".
