Re: Would you bang Jesus?
(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 02:07 am (UTC)(link)Eh, I'm more centrist, so I basically have EVERYBODY in my church upset with me, at any given moment, LOL.
A lot of what I said above was taken either from a commonsense approach to the scrolls they would have been referring to at the time (OT scriptures/Levitical laws of cleanliness), and the NT scriptures regarding how they lived (mostly Luke and Acts), that everyone seems to skip over, plus archaelogical knowledge/infodumps that made it into the sermons I grew up listening to (that I now wish I had been paying closer attention to).
I think the Hellenistic haircuts (short hair/clean-shaven) were taken from murals/carvings found in the Old City, but whether they dated back to the times of the Roman occupation, or just pictured them, I don't recall. I remember seeing a history docu that said the Romans saved their urine to make ammonia/bleach, though. So I need to do a little digging myself, and see if they had the knowledge to make soap!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 02:24 am (UTC)(link)awww that must be the worst! :(
i wish there was a lot more inclusion of historical context and knowledge when people are discussing the bible. like, people go to sermons on a sunday or w/e, but they don't get told why certain things are important, or why meanings change when you put it in a different context. they just exist as sort of... imaginary figures in stories, and not historical figures, with a whole culture surrounding them.
which sucks because i find all this stuff incredibly interesting, but i guess most people think it's dry and boring, haha
