I think it just depends re: shoes in the South. Most people I know take shoes off when going into their own home or to their friends' houses. Exceptions would be parties or dinners (although I'm barefoot if it's at my house LOL).

Yeah, in my experience it's been largely a question of familiarity. At your own home, family's home, close friend's home, shoes off (but that's also not mandated, more about comfort). Kids at each other houses almost always have shoes off. But going to someone's house I don't know that well, I'm not going to take my shoes off unless I'm asked or invited to.
