Is anyone here just totally uninterested in shippy fic?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because I'm getting sick of being accused of being a prudish homophobe for wanting my favorite two fictional guys to be gen. It's not that I "can't see them as a couple" (I totally can) or that I think it "ruins their friendship" (it totally doesn't), or that I'm being "closed minded about their love", I'm just totally uninterested in romance in fanfic, given how much overexposure to constant romantic storylines I get in mainstream media, and therefore I'm just more interested in the two guys as platonic bffs because I find their relationship *more* interesting to me in gen fic.

This is not unique to slash. I also don't care about non-canonical or minor het romances either, and I don't read whole long fics dedicated solely to canon het romances, even if they're a major part of canon, because dude, I already saw it in canon. I don't exactly dislike or oppose romance in canon, I just find it to be one of the most uninteresting topics to explore in fanfic.

The only part that makes me feel guilty is that while I would theoretically like there to be more major canon gay/lesbian romances between main characters in TV shows where being gay is *not* the entire point of the show or the characters involved, I *still* don't really care about romantic storylines of any kind. Romance takes up too much damn screentime.

/and no, I am not asexual or uninterested in romance IRL, it's just soooooooooo overrated as a central topic in fiction.

I get that. I myself read pretty much only shippy fic, but even then I sometimes get tired by how much romance is oversaturated in the media, especially when it's blatantly shoe-horned because TV execs seem to think that people would lose interest if they don't see these two conventionally attractive characters bone. If it's two characters that I really like, then yes I want all of the shipping, but if it's just generic protagonist dude and generic love interest lady (which I think is the predominant form) I'm just meh.

THANK you. I had friends who used to guilt me about it. Seriously, I don't find romance alone that interesting. At the very least I like the pairing to be part of the story, not the only story.

And why can't two people just be good friends? There's a lot of depth and beauty in that.

It's not just you, I feel the same. For a few years, I read and wrote romance/pornfic almost exclusively. But that was because it was the majority, by far, and I always enjoyed the genfic that did roll around. Nowadays I'm the same as you--I'm way more interested in the dynamics in gen fic than romance.

Yeah, but I'm not really interested in fanfic at all.

Is this Sherlock, by any chance? I feel the same about quite a few fandoms. Mostly fandoms where there is no canon ship and I really just want more of canon, not fics that "fix" it by rewriting it as an epic love story.

God, yes. I read gen much more than romantic fic. Liking gen over romantic fic is loads more common than you'd think. It's just that I think smaller fandoms are more discerning and happy enough to live and let live, whereas in larger fandoms with lots of male characters you get a lot of the slash-happy types* who blacklist anyone who doesn't ship their OTP, start ship Wars and so on.

*I'm talking about the rabid slashers, to be clear.

No, you aren't the only one. I really have no interest in 'ships or slash. I really would rather read about friendships. (well there also has to a good plot but that is besides the point.)

Heck, even when there is a 'ship I would rather read about the partners other relationships.

Only in some fandoms? I love some of my shippy fandoms, but in, say, Sleepy Hollow, Sherlock, Bones, L&O:SVU, The Closer, and a number of others, i just don't see any ships i really like/support, and am 100 percent happy reading gen (and avoiding shippy/sexy stuff).

If anyone is giving you shite about it, fuck 'em. I am sick to death of 'romance' for the sake of romance, and most tv shows and movies would be 100 percent better without that whole aspect.

I'm not *totally* uninterested in shippy fic, although I do generally prefer gen, especially with juggernaut slash pairings. I usually only like shippy fic (het or slash) when the fics are either short 'n' sweet or the focus is lots of porn.

But what I really get sick of is shippy *discussion* I am so sick of people being all about the ship potential and squeeing over how two characters glanced at each other and focusing on just the shippy hints in an episode when what I really want to talk about is the episode's really interesting themes and ideas or really thought-provoking subject matter or the significance and intricacy of the characters' friendships or other interpersonal dynamics and how these are important to the show as a whole. Shipping is so....fragmentary.
