She and Skinner broke up yearsssss ago. There was an episode where Edna runs into Ned, they hook up, and the episode ends up with "Will they/won't they" type thing. It was the season finale and the creators asked fans to vote online all summer on whether "Nedna" as they called it should be canon or not. The fandom got their wish and it became canon. (They married offscreen and moved in together)

The scene where you find out she died was so sad though. Ned is dreaming about taking dance lessons with Edna, and it's really cute. You don't know it's a dream until it pans out and Ned smiles, mentioning that he's sure going to miss that laugh. He's by a picture of Edna and is wearing a black armband, so it's pretty much implied she died somehow offscreen. :(

Actually they sort of had a wedding hint on screen, but god help me I can't find that clip. I think Homer or somebody was doing something plot-related in the foreground but if you happened to glance away, there's Ned and Edna in wedding gear, hustling into the courthouse in the background. Lasted all of two seconds in an episode that wasn't about them anyway. I was so excited when I saw it, and weeks later when the 'secret' marriage news broke, was a little surprised that just about nobody else had caught it.
