Re: Dumb fandom speculations

The reason Gunslinger Girl is such a popular managa is because it easily allows anime fans with emotionally distant families to self-insert into a clear range of emotionally stunted archtypes who get provided with the requisite mentor figures.

That and it has a lot of fodder for lolicons.

It'd be an excellent example of the complete inability for lolicons to see a scathing critique, except it turns out the author is a lolicon?

(death to the author)

Yep, the author is a lolicon. He apparently did art for a lolicon game. Didn't Gunslinger Girl start out as a loli doujin?

And is this manga worth picking up? I read a bit of it, but forgot about it. I'm not sure if I want to pick it up if there's a lot of lolicon pandering.

Couldn't speak to the origins, but I recall ages ago reading an interview where he talked about why he used the girls which was unfortunate.

I really enjoyed it, but it'd be hard to give a good faith recomendation because it hits most of my favourite things (well drawn cute girl counter terrorist officers in a cynical modern world with some semi-future touches, anyone can die, and the question of what it means to be human, with the aformentioned emotionally stunted characters? Yes pls.) and it is very rare for fanservice to bother me.

Oh, I don't think I even want to know about what he said in that interview.

Thanks to your description, I think I will give it another shot and just hope that there's much skeevyness when it comes to the girls. Fanservice doesn't really bother for the most part, but when it comes to underaged girls like the ones in Gunslinger it is a major do not want.

You're into cyperpunk and futuristic stuff right? Got any manga recs? Or anime. Either is fine.
