Fandom rant

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Today someone posted a fic for my (small, gradually dying) fandom. The author had clearly never seen an episode of the show and made huge, canonical mistakes.

As if the current state of the fandom wasn't bad enough - dying and full of crappy, teenage authors who write fic after fic about the OTP who are wildly OOC.

If you're not going to bother to even make a stab at getting the canon and characters right, why bother posting your shitty fanfic in the first place????

*huge mistakes that disregarded the canon

I feel you. There's this person that posts stuff for a small, dying fandom once or twice a year, and although she's written things that show they clearly care about the fandom, she also writes total crap with OOC characters and, like, fairies and things that aren't in canon. :(
Tbf it's a fandom of about three.

Just a thought, is this something that has multiple versions? For example, a few shows now have American/UK/French versions. So if that's the case, it's possible the writer just didn't note which version.

If not... well, some people do dabble in things fandom first. I personally don't get it.

Heh. Ouch. I don't know, but the most recent story posted on ff.net in my tiny fandom . . . had no discernible connection to the fandom except the poster's avatar. I mean ZERO CONNECTION. Unless you count "contains a family; allegedly takes place in the past" as a connection.

Probably it made sense in their head? I don't know; I've got nothing.

I'm afraid my mind immediately went to the 70s children's series, Land of the Lost. Then I hoped there wasn't a fandom for it.

Wow, that sounds fecking awful, anon.

IDEK what the author in my fandom was thinking. The bit that really gets my goat though, is that the other crappy teenage authors in the fandom are giving it kudos and commenting on how sweet it is.

She spells a main character's name wrong, and resurrects two secondary characters who, in canon, died before the show even started. *Waaaaiils*

Yeah, I usually try to diplomatically encourage authors in that fandom even if I'm not crazy about the story itself, because the fandom is sooooo tiny and maybe they'll get better. . . but this one gave me nothing to hold onto. :(

Do you think she'd respond to a gentle PM correction. . . on the spelling of the main character's name, if nothing else?

I guess with a fandom of 3, you haven't got much choice there. :/ (What's the fandom, anon?)

Sadly this whole stupid drama is taking place on AO3. Can you even PM on AO3? Can't think how right now.

Oh, no -- I guess you can't. At least, I don't know how. :(

Emily of New Moon books -- another series by the author of Anne of Green Gables, which is a much healthier fic community. I think the active fandom for Emily of New Moon is a little more than 3, but maybe not that much more.

At least they're actually writing about canon characters. At least half of the recently-written fic is about OCs (including quite a few of the "canon character's long-lost relative" sort).
