Slash fic is not popular because fandom hates women. It is popular because many women like the idea of two hot guys fucking. And with most writers (and somewhat fandom) are women.

I agree with this. But I also think you can't deny a lot of the internalized misogyny that goes on in slash fandoms. (Female characters get treated so badly sometimes.)

this is honestly so obvious I'm not sure how anyone misses it

Yeah, pretty much this.

This.

Also, I have issues with my body as a woman, that I don't have to deal with when writing two male characters.

Also, also, most interesting characters are male (thanks TV and Hollywood *rolls eyes*) and get to have amazing adventures in space, at sea, fighting crime, that kind of thing.

Even where there are interesting female characters, there's never usually the range of personalities you get with male characters.

To me honestly (besides the two guys fucking thing being hot) - it also takes out the whole issue of potential pregnancy altogeher, which is the most unsexy thing ever to me. Safe to say I'm not much of a fan of MPreg or guys adopting kids either in fanfic.

AYRT I have no problem with kids in fic or MPreg (different strokes :)). It's other things and the female anatomy and sex that bug me and are linked to some nasty stuff in my history. It's really freeing to read romance where I don't have that link.

anon if you don't make a reply with the rest of your sentence I am going to be so frustrated

I think this point of view is limited, might be true for some but not all, and ignores gay and bi women.

Re: Dumb fandom speculations

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Gay women account for maybe five percent of the population. And bi women also likes dudes. And yournsexuality does not equal what you fantasize to.

Re: Dumb fandom speculations

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
What's a yournsexuality?

Yo, we're talking about statistics here, man. We're not talking about individual cases. There are all kinds of people doing shit in fandom for all kinds of reasons. But when you look at fandom from perspective, taking it as a whole, there are a lot more women who are into men than there are women who are into women or men who are into women or people who aren't into anything at all. It's an explanation for fandom as a whole. It's okay if it doesn't take into account every single unique person.

A lot of gay women prefer to write slash because they want to write about gay characters but femslash is too personal. They don't want people reading their stuff and saying "Oh, so that's how you have sex!"

I thought this was common knowledge? But the way female characters are sometimes treated as a result is kinda misogynist. I don't think that applies to the majority of cases, though.

It's more that I can't believe there exists a sentiment counter to this one about the existence of slash fandom.

I agree, though it find it odd because, to me, a man who isn't attracted to women isn't attractive, so slash = two unattractive men... Hence I tried slash, but don't read it.
