Eh, both styles are kinda bad imo.

They're like the worst attributes of cartoon and anime mixed one.

Anime eyes creep me the fuck out so bad.

The eyes look pretty cool to me either way, but I get why you don't like it, OP. Lighter or lack of pupils in anime generally is meant to suggest blindness or possession or something supernatural like that.

My beef with anime styles is the whole "eyes are completely visible through the bangs" thing, and I used to do that a lot when I was drawing anime. At least it looks like the artist has corrected that on her newer picture.

Yeah, the lighter pupil thing gets REALLY confusing when characters with normal vision encounter blind/possessed/etc characters, and there is no difference in how the eyes are drawn and it has to be pointed out to us by the characters themselves that someone's blind/possessed/etc.

The lighter pupils kinda bugs me too. I think that because it's not a natural appearance, it really grabs your attention, so it needs to be reserved for things that need to stand out visually (no pun intended). When you use it on everything, it loses its impact.

But in real life, mostly the eye colour DOESN'T tell you who is blind. It's a stylistic choice to do it like that, but I don't think it's necessary a genre convention - especially considering how wide-spread "light pupils" is.

This secret is like watching someone get in a horrible car accident that totals their vehicle and then the first thing they take issue with is that they spilled their coffee on their new jeans. Takes all kinds I guess.

OP

I think the coffee spill is the pupils but what is the car accident? The art overall? I don't like the stories for the art.
I still laughed at this.

If you straight up admit you don't follow stories for the art then more power to you. You're tougher than I am. >:V

Yeah, just, it's kind of impressive that you can look at art that bad and choose to care about only one tiny grain on a sandy beach of deviantart awfulness.

I kind of love this comment. Haha.

While technically pupils are black, eyes do reflect the light around them. So when it comes to painting them if you wanting something realistic it's be jarring to have them flat black. Not that they'd appear as green as in the other picture, subtlety is key.
